White House backs plan to reserve 700MHz 'D Block' for public safety network PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 17 December 2010
Public safety agencies in the US have been pushing for a while to have the so-referred to as 'D Block' portion of the 700MHz wi-fi spectrum all to themselves, and it seems to be like they will now formally depend on the assist of the White House in that effort. The Obama administration announced at this time that it's backing plans to order the airwaves -- estimated to be value $3 billion in the event that they had been auctioned off -- for a brand new national public safety community, and it also plans to ask Congress to approve the extra spending wanted to truly build out the community, which the FCC estimates could value as much as $15 billion.

As The Wall Street Journal notes, the fate of the proposed community is now largely within the hands of Home Republicans, who stay divided on the plan -- although some key members have come out in help of it in latest days.
