Free WiFi access is catching like wildfire, in which countries like the US and Australia, have already started their initiative to deliver free WiFi services to their citizens. Well, next up in line is none other than China, whereby Beijing will the China’s brainchild in their free WiFi initiative. Mainstream telecommunication provides like China Mobile, Telecom, and Unicom have already started building city-wide public WiFi networks.
Beijing residents will be able to use the 2Mbps network for free, however, there’s a small catch at the end of the line. In order to access the ‘My Beijing’ free WiFi service, users will need to submit their phone number in exchange for access to the service. Although such exercise might infringe some privacy issue, still, giving your number will grant you access to the 2Mbps network. Hopefully, users that submit their phone numbers won’t be subjected to heavy bombardments of spam – well, the WiFi is FREE right, and you can always register a prepaid number?
